Pet clinic group receives grants
By Staff Reports
The Tennessee Animal Resource Center has received a $6,500 grant from PETCO as it
moves closer to opening a high volume neuter clinic in Maury County.
Mary Ruth Rogers, board president of the Tennessee Animal Resource Center, said the group
is looking at two possible locations for a clinic in Maury County. She said a decision will be
made soon, but having to sign a 10-year lease is causing some hesitation.
“If we were at the shelter, we wouldn’t have to delay,” she said.
Rogers said the fight over the control of the animal shelter has made it nearly impossible to
open a clinic at the shelter, even though the components necessary for a clinic are available at
the shelter.
Rogers has said in previous interviews she hopes to open the off-site clinic in September.
Earlier in July, the Tennessee Animal Resource Center and “Gotta Spay to Play” partnership
received a $4,600 grant, which is funded through state’s Animal Friendly license plate funds.
Rogers said the group has also applied for other grants and are in the process of applying for
a grant with Maddie’s Fund.
According to the United States Humane Society, more than 3 million cats and dogs are
euthanized every year because of overpopulation, while 6-8 million dogs and cats are being
admitted to animal shelters.
